Our “Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol” Program effectively raises awareness in the Atlanta Fulton County community about the dangers of alcohol and underage drinking through education, and information dissemination. Community mobilization is a community-based process; it is a deliberate process of involving local institutions, local leaders, community groups, and members of the community in taking action on a particular issue, in this case “alcohol.”
It is potentially an effective strategy for creating change in the community because community mobilization can: contribute to sustain behavioral change; improve the probability of the initiative to reach a broad audience by involving people who have a variety of rolls within the community; and encourage local capacity building and promote investment in objectives. We utilize the Strategic Prevention Framework to collect and assess data, build capacity, plan, implement, and evaluate the Program. We facilitate evidence based alcohol use prevention curriculums to youth 10-18 years of age and adults by trained facilitators who are culturally competent; we conduct town hall meetings, teach-Ins, lunch and learns, health fairs, and environmental scans related to risk factors associated with alcohol. An Environmental Scan is an on-site visual assessment of the degree to which retailers who have liquor licenses are targeting under-aged consumers utilizing the 4 P’s of marketing: Product: Does the product look similar to non-alcohol products? Placement: Are the products located in places in the store that normally attract young patrons such as near the candy or at eye level for children? Price: Which is less, the price of cokes and milk or the price of alcohol products? Promotion: Are the advertisements geared toward young patrons (i.e. cartoon characters)?
